The use of polythene bags in packaging is a major cause of pollution. These bags cause environmental problems if they are not properly disposed of. One method to get rid of them is to recycle them and the other method is to use them as a binder in building materials like in sand bricks or as a stabilizer in pavements. Has anyone ventured into this and what kind of properties was obtained both physical and mechanical?
Plastic shopping bags are a huge environmental problem around the world and are causing huge issues that affect human and animal health.
Recycling plastic bags is problematic. The problem is when people put individual bags into the recycling stream, and this action usually causes problems with recycling machinery. That is the reason it is best to reuse plastic bags as much as possible. That said, there are ways that municipalities have been encouraging citizens to help them to recycle plastic bags.
The major step to get rid of the pollution problems of waste polythene bags is to use our own reusable shopping bags instead of plastic bags. Reusable shopping bags are available in many colors and styles and can buy them in various weights for different types of products.
Thanks for your comments and recommendations. Our country, Kenya, solution to polythene bags menace was to ban the use, sale, carrying of the bags because of their non biodegradable nature. As Kenya joined the list of countries that have done the same, I understand other countries are still weighing this option especially because of the business community who depend on the sale of such bags. Hence, many countries are in dilemma between business interests and environmental interest which are more often than not in conflict. Would like to know more about your country's options.
It is a major problem that pollutes the environment. One way of fighting this is to reduce the number of bags when go shopping by putting as much items in one bag as possible, without overloading it. Use the used bags more than once -if possible. Before you go out, take a bag or two just in case you buy something. refuse a bag from the shop if you buy a small item and just put it in your pocket.
In India an effective solution is being explored in use of polythene bags and plastic bottles and other products by shredding and mixing with heated aggregates of road for plastic coating before mixing with hot bitumen.
Roads are constructed using plastic waste.
