Cheating is rampant in many tertiary institutions and despite the punishment forms like the exam being cancelled or suspending the cheating student from the university for a year or two, this problem continues. Are there new better forms of punishments that may discourage this cheating practice?
If any form of punishment seems to be ineffective, proper guidance to students may be the key to lessen the occurrences of students' cheating in universities.
How do we effectively punish university exam cheaters?
Beside stopping the exam cheaters from re-taking the exam or expelling them from university, perhaps can consider sending them to jail / juvenile prison i.e. treating it as a criminal case e.g. 1-2 years jail term upon conviction. The above measures might sounds harsh but hope can prevent / deter students from such temptation / taking such risk of cheating in exam. If such punishment is not severe enough, not only they will re-cheat again in exam but they might practice the same in bigger scale when they come out to work whereby the negative impact to society can be even greater. Prevention is better than cure whereby the latter might take higher cost to rectify.
