It depends on the management decisions and policies that are your focus; and also the parameters you can measure. I have been involved in a study of the indicators of sand plain forest for example. Our goal was simple: determine what are the best indicators of healthy sandplain forest. And so we compared our habitat of interest to adjacent habitats that were declining sandplain forests being overtaken by other tree species. In that way we could determine what plants and invertebrates were more common in sandplain forests and disappeared in control sites or declining sandplain forests. So what specific policies and questions are your focus? And what organisms and/or other parameters are within the realm of practicality for you to measure? Good luck with your work.
