The uncertainties of the various components during the thermal conductivity measurement (density, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity), affect on the total conductivity value. Especially in case of dealing with plasma spray coatings.
Hello, Taylor gives a pretty good summary of the influence of various errors on thermal conductivity measurements (See:- R.E. Taylor, Thermal Conductivity Determinations of Thermal Barrier Coatings, Mater. Sci. Eng. A, 1998, 245(2), p 160-167 30).
In practical measurements accurate thickness measurements is critical so thickness needs to be measured from micrographs rather than by mechanical means.
Density can also be very tricky as there are multiple ways to measure density of coatings and not all give the true density (or porosity Level)
Thank you, it is interesting study especially for comparing the thermal conductivity of free standing and with substrate coatings.
But, how the uncertainties of the density, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity, affect on the value of the conductivity? When dealing with free standing coatings.
