I have tried to study quantum mechanics before but never understood it. After learning basics about quantum computing and quantum information including quantum hardware and qubit types, I wish to start studying quantum physics again. What are few of the areas of quantum mechanics that Quantum information systems relate or are based on?
The Mathematical framework of Quantum information theory carries over to address the issue of dynamics of nuclear spin ensembles ,e.g the NMR spectroscopy or MRI , nmr spin systems were one of the earliest candidates for scalable quantum computers.
In my opinion the concepts of Quantum information theory do not only relate to quantum mechanics but provide a great impetus for research on Linear algebra, Matrix theory , Multivariate statistics and Matrix Calculus of real and complex variables.

I know very little about quantum computing.
Still, I am allured to give a response to your question.
You know that we get idea of discrete states from quantum mechanics.
Simple and my favourite example is the case of a particle in 1 D box.
From basic formalism of quantum mechanics, we get that the particle can stay only with certain specific energy states. This is the actual framework of the nature. Classical mechanics is a special domain . I mean , quantum theory explains the true behaviour of Nature and classical mechanics is a sub set .
Anyway, that Concept of discreteness of Physical properties of the nature has really a charming flavour.
As in the previous example, we see that angular momentum, intrinsic angular momentum ( spin ) , all of these Properties have discrete value and discrete orientation in space also.
This idea is used for quantum computing.
As I told you that I have a very little idea of quantum computing, I will not not say anything more about that part.

Quantum computing is more of the computing based, where we are much concerned about solving a problem. There is a a lot of quantum mechanics going on, as the quantum computers uses photons, phonons and electrons for the process. The waves of the electrons, photons and phonons can be modified in a reversible manner to get the outcome, which we get as the result of the problem.

You are not alone unable to understand quantum mechanics. The tragedy began in the 20s of the twentieth century when, particularly, a|0> + b|1> was declared as meaning that squares of a and b are probabilities to find a system correspondingly in states |0> or |1>, to say nothing about what the hell the states are? Standard answer became "Shut up and calculate". Those who were not satisfied declared heretics and subjected to ostracism with no way to make career in quantum physics.
Due to that many years of huge efforts to create a quantum computer based on some physical implementation of "qubits" cannot be considered as successful.
The only way to work around this problem is to redefine meanings of "state". "observable", measurement" using more adequate formalism.

Well, as far as I understand, Quantum mechanics is actually a mathematical framework of nature at the very fundamental level. In quantum information science, people are trying to utilize some of these mathematical understandings to derive information systems, to do certain computations, to build robust communication protocols and much more stuff. Most basic notions like- state space, state evolution, postulates of measurement, calculating ensemble states, global phase, etc are very basic terms in both Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Computation. Some applications, like the teleportation algorithm, is a very simple practice that is based on the very fundamental notion of quantum mechanics. I think if you dive more deeply into the Quantum Information Science, you would be able to unleash more connection between them. I would actually say, Quantum Information systems in a part of the vast area of Quantum Mechanics.
