Parents often focus on the potential risks of screen time and data privacy, expressing concerns about the suitability of AI tools and their impact on social skills. In contrast, parents of middle school students may be more concerned about ensuring that AI tools enhance learning without replacing traditional educational methods, emphasizing the importance of balanced use of technology.
As AI becomes more integrated into education, parental concerns tend to shift with age group: early childhood parents often prioritize safety and screen time, while secondary and tertiary-level parents focus more on career readiness, digital responsibility, and real-world skill development. Involvement also varies—digitally literate parents are more confident navigating AI tools and thus more engaged in their child’s learning journey. At the undergraduate level, there's a growing expectation for AI to enhance critical thinking, practical exposure, and career outcomes.
In this context, our paper titled "Enhancing Student Engagement and Outcomes through an Innovative Pedagogy for Teaching Big Data Analytics at the Undergraduate Level" (IJCMI, 2024) explores how AI-supported, project-based learning improves student engagement and outcomes. While not directly surveying parents, the study indirectly reflects tertiary-level parental expectations—emphasizing applied learning, interactive techniques, and industry-relevant skills that address both student and parental aspirations for meaningful, AI-integrated education.
