It is not only important to write a research paper for flourishing academic career but also important to increase the citation. Seeking your guidance and advice from the expert. Tqvm
Halima - Subir and Manoj make good points. If you can publish in an established, high impact journal - it's more likely that it has had to pass a rigorous review process (although not always) and more likely that it will be accessed by more readers - who are more likely to be active researchers. Apart from emerging researchers and Research Higher Degree students, you are mainly looking to target established researchers as your intended audience - as they are more likely to publish and this cite your work. Subir's point about increasing the visibility of your publication is included - but it's not just about citation. Take ResearchGate, for instance. One of my publications is very close to 10,000 reads on RG and yet it has not been cited that much in the wider literature. That demonstrates that it does have impact beyond citation.

Try to publish in international peer-reviewed journals indexed in Web of Science and SCOPUS. After publication, increase the visibility through scholarly communication networks such as ResearchGate, Academic.com, etc. Because, a study reported that 50% of papers never read other than its authors and editors.
Using social media to promote your article is also useful, i.e. Twitter, LinkedIn, even Facebook. Have you set up a Google scholar profile, that is also a good way to track your citations and increase awareness of your research. Good luck.
Halima, you are correct-for a flourishing academic career you need to increase your citations. It is a cycle that for many find it difficult (or bother) to think beyond. But to have a meaningful career we must go further than simple reads and citations.
One way to increase the number of citations on your published paper is to make your research paper easily discoverable online. Recently top publishers such as Wiley, Springer, Elsevier etc. have talked about the importance of authors optimizing their content on search engines.
By optimizing your research content for popular search engines such as Google, you can drive viewership, utilization and citation counts for your research paper. So Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is one option. There are few more.
Based on my conversations with published researchers, below are some of the steps you can take to increase citation count of your article
1. Identify key phrases: Identify 2–5 keywords in your topic of research. This can be used in all parts of your content such as title, abstract, headings, sub-headings, keywords section, graphics, tables, figures, file name and description tags.
More than SEO, keywords are also used by abstracting and indexing services to tag research content.
Selecting the right keywords can increase citation count by improving article discoverability. Start with keywords and phrases that a typical user will search for in your domain. You can also use tools to help you identify the right keywords for your content, such as Google Trends and Google Adwords . Also generic marketing tools such as SEMRush, Moz, Similarweb can help you more if you are keen on going deep on the SEO thing.
