I prepared acryloyl chloride by following method:
Take the acrylic acid up in a suitable solvent (MDC). Add thayonyl chloride dropwise and heat the solution to reflux tor several hours. After maybe 3-4 hours distil off the solvent (50 degree C) and then product (72-76 degree C).
Basic procedure:
Take the acrylic acid up in a suitable solvent (dichloromethane would be typical). While stirring under an inert atmosphere (e.g. nitrogen or argon), add thionyl chloride (~1 molar equivalent) dropwise, then heat the solution to reflux for several hours. Beware as the reaction will liberate HCl, so you will want the reaction vessel to have a vent, preferably bubbled through an aq NaOH solution. After maybe 3-4 hours, distill off the solvent and then distill the product. Boiling pt of the compound is 72-76 deg C at atm. pressure. Note that because thionyl chloride has a very similar bp (79 deg C), it's probably best to use just one equiv of thionyl chloride, such that all will ideally be consumed. Any remaining acrylic acid will stay in the reaction pot (bp is ~140 deg C).
You can also try a similar reaction with oxaloyl chloride wich is cleaner in my opinion than thyonil chloride. Be careful to run the reaction at low temperature, cold ice if its possible. The work up is similar to the mentioned above by Mr. Osouli.
