You can resolve this issue by following these steps:

1- Go to this page:

https://www.researchgate.net/contact?type=contact_duplicate_accounts

2- From the drop down menu, select:

"I have found duplicate publications"

3- Fill in the requested information in the message textbox. It clearly states in the message textbox that the citations will be added.

I have tried this a couple of times and the publications were merged as requested in a few days.

Hello Julia, there was an instance when I also made a similar mistake.  And I left it, because RG says that the number of citations is just APPROXIMATE.  RG is not able to add 3 instances of my papers being cited by others and I could accept the reason provided when I got in touch with community support.  So I stopped thinking about it!  There's such a lot of work each day!

Thanks Miranda, except that essentially your answer is the service is not accurate for citation rate and therefore shouldn't be used for that.  I have already deleted 2 duplicate pubs with roughly equal numbers of citations, and another 13 will go if I delete the lowest cited of the third.  If the approximate citations is really "give or take 20" then I should be VERY wary of any citation rate I see on others pages. As a scientist accuracy is critical to me.  So far the take home lesson to me is "Do NOT accept Research Gate suggestions for publications you may have missed posting" as that's where these doubles all came from.  Like you, there is too much to do for me to monitor Research gate regularly so i have been trusting their emails that I missed a publication.  The underlying algorithm that identified papers and citations is flawed, in my opinion. Six time now I have had to tell it that the same person in sociology is not a co-author with me on a same molecular biology paper where the initials match. It should remember after the first no.

I agree...best thing is to not accept those suggestions from RG as my colleague Julia has said. And, when using these platforms to evaluate anyone, keep in mind it may be incomplete in either direction. Could be too much, or too little...not everyone curates this very well, either in uploading or in cleaning.

I’ve found a duplicate research item. How can I report it?

Duplicates can occur when an author adds a research item that is already in our database, or when more than one author adds the same item. If you have found duplicate research items on your Research tab, please help us merge them by editing the items' details. We automatically merge research items where all information is identical, including title, date of publication, author list, and journal.

Please note: Research items will not automatically merge if:

• you have added both of the research items yourself 
• all information is not identical
• one of the research items has a DOI
• both items have different DOIs. 

Please also note that we don’t merge articles with their linked data or preprints. We encourage our members to upload their work during all stages of the publication process, so we consider these to be separate research items.
