I looked online and found various models which are device based which talk about modeling the solar, wind characteristics and the inverter control. If I was primarily interested in the load flow and the energy management of the microgrid could I model the sources as current sources? Is there any reference that talks about how to do such modeling?

you sould first tranfer your data into per unit (take attention for line model, for long or short legth), after that, you can use any software or matlab toolbooks

Try softwares like openDSS, DS-Sim-PC, XENDEE which are free softwares used for distribution systems(X/R ratio high). They have a very good support also through sourceforge.com. Xendee is a cloud based software and has a pretty good online support

according to me you can consider different sources as a current source but for that exact data for that is required so, you need to search it
and software named as ETAP can be used for load flow analysis but i am not sure about optimal power flow
you can also find the optimal power flow by using MATlab program and program for that can be founded mathworks.
I suggest using power world simulator whose free version includes upto 12 bus optimal power flow solution too.
Some software like ETAP do it the best. There are also free software like HomerEnergy that help you to model a combined grid including renewables like wind turbines, solar cells and etc.
Thank you all for your suggestions. I am planning to model this in MATLAB Simulink, as it is a requirement of my project, but I will make sure to take a look at the other softwares you have mentioned.
