I'm starting an investigation proyect where I record Inca Jays (Querrequerres / Cyanocorax yncas) calls in Parque Nacional Waraira Repano and compare them with calls from the Universidad Simon Bolivar / IVIC populations. My intention is to demonstrate that there're diffenrences between those two populations, at least in their dialect. I've got Raven Lite - a software programmed to compare sounds patterns - but my intention is also to evaluate behaviour and interactions between individuals and the recordings I made... Has anyone an idea on how do I meassure behaviour?
One approach you could take would be to create an index of antagonistic behavior instigated by the recorded bird calls. For example, you play the call and the bird perks upright (one score); you continue to play the call and the bird vocally responds (another score); with continuous playback, the bird flies to the source (one score) and begins antagonistic behaviour such as wing/beak displays (another score). You could also score behaviour based on non-antagonistic behaviour such as pair-bonding response and flock-bonding responses. To make the behaviour scores meaningful, you should base them on observed responses collected from the literature or your experience with the species in their habitat. When you collect your index scores, then you can compare them at the appropriate level for your study (e.g. population or species) by conducting tests and modelling. I hope this helps. Good luck.
