The key question for me in action research is: How can I/we improve what we are doing? (Whitehead and McNiff 2009 - from the book "Doing and Writing Action Research"). A basic definition of action research is for me the one constructed by Peter Reason and Hilary Bradbury. This is what they call i a working definition of action research (2001, p. 1 - from the first issue og the journal "Action Research"):

Action research is a participatory, democratic process concerned with developing practical knowing in the pursuit of worthwhile human purposes, grounded in a participatory worldview which we believe is emerging at this historical moment. It seeks to bring together action and reflection, theory and practice, in participation with others, in the pursuit of practical solutions to issues of pressing concern to people, and more generally the flourishing of individual persons and their communities.

In practical terms that means facilitating collaboration with relevant groups (It can be the teachers, the pupils, the parents, all above ...) and asking them: What is the situation at hand? What is our concern? What do we want to improve? What can we do to improve the situation? What is each and every one of us willing to commit to do to improve the situation? I can also recommend a book written by Olav Eikeland "The Ways of Aristotle" were important parts of thinking and doing action research are explored and explaned.

I appreciate your responses. I am very unfamiliar with action research projects. This will be my first. However, I have opted to change my course of direction. I have decided to explore code-switching and its effect on the ESOL/ESL student's ability to learn and test. Years ago I was part of a focus group that explored this concept and how the bilingual student is able to cognitively utilize this strategy when faced with uncertainty in educational work. Also, I try to educate my students on this whenever I can since it is not a part of our standards, but a part of everyday life.

Again, thank you for your assistance in helping me further understand what is warranted for this form of research.

Typically, action research starts by exploring a topic through a process of reconnaissance. From there an initial problem of practice is identities and explored in more depth through a review of the literature and contextual setting. From this review, and working with others, an action is developed to address the problem of practice. This action is then implemented and studied on an agreed upon methodology and reported out on to redevelop a new understanding of the problem of practice and suggest if the actions taken were successful and what should be done next. I would consult your program to ask how many cycles of action research you are expected to take part in. To support this work I would suggest, if you have access to a university library, a review of some of the articles in H. Bradury The SAGE Handbook of action research.
