How do I calculate laser diameter in laser damage threshold measurements using ND:YAG laser?
I think you could better operate not with laser diameter - it is conventional and very rough characteristics of intensity profile or intensity distribution in the beam cross section in the field of interaction with a target. If you need namely the diameter, you have to use standard definitions, for instance from ISO11146:2005 standard - the diameter is calculated through second momentums of the beam intensity distribution. Other definitions of the diameter are also mentioned and discussed there.
In my experience it is usually the peak power which causes damage.
