I am trying to calculate the heat loss along the length of a pipeline. I have been able to generate the temperature profile along the pipeline using the formula in the picture below. However what I now want to calculate is the rate of flow of heat per unit time, but I cant figure out how to do that.
I tried using dq/dt = U*2(pi)rL*(fluid temperature-Ambient temperature) and
dq/dt = m Cp dt , but the answers I got were not correct.
Any help will be appreciated.
The equations don't look too bad, so perhaps you have a problem with your value of U? Perhaps your value of U needs to be calculated as a function of position along the pipe, if the fluid temperature is changing significantly? Did you consider thermal resistance in the pipe itself? Are you hot enough that you also need to consider radiative heat transfer, especially from the outside surface of the pipe?
