First you need to know the molecular weight of your PEG (200 to above 20 000). PEG 6000 is typically used and there is literature on that topic. See, e.g., http://www.plantphysiol.org/content/plantphysiol/51/5/914.full.pdf. Low MW PEG could be toxic, very high MW could be too viscous.
