I have an experience of iron oxide nanorods being partially destroyed upon high temperature(90°C) incubation with citrate. Is there any reagent that must have been added in order to prevent this effect? Does incubating at Room temperature also coat the surface of iron oxide with carboxyl groups?
Iron oxides in soils not only occur as discrete phases, but are also closely associated with silicate clays on the surfaces of which they may form coatings. By virtue of their ability to adhere to the surfaces of clay minerals, iron oxides may greatly modify their properties, particularly ion exchange behaviour and surface charge.

I believe the etching effect of citrate is due to its acidity. Diluting the citrate concentration might be a viable solution to minimize iron oxide dissolution. I am unclear about your purpose of using citrate, but I believe adding any reagent should be performed cautiously as it could introduce impurities into your reaction system.
As far as I know, citrate can coordinate with Fe3+ ions and therefore, it can render iron oxide surface carboxyl groups.
