i have used a doped photo catalyst for bio diesel synthesis from a novel non edible oil. Now please let me know how could i find out weather the reaction was successful or not? as i find three layers in a reactor. how could i measure its yield?
You can transfer product mixture into separatory funnel and wait for separation completely. Biodiesel phase (FAME, FAEE) was obtained in upper layer and you can check it easiiy by GC, GC-MS to determine the present of biodiesel as well as its yield
Biodiesel synthesis from a novel non edible oil, during Trans esterification Glycerol part is replaced by alkoxy part from alcohol, If you isolate product by GC or HPLC and take NMR ,looking at a spilliting pattern , we can identify whether the product has been formed or not.
After washing by product , the methanol test can be used to find the percentage of conversion of the oil to Biodiesel. The test was proved to be sufficient for conversion estimation (Al-Hammamre and Yamine, 2014).
This test relies on the fact that Biodiesel (methyl ester) dissolves easily in methanol
forming a clear bright phase while vegetable or animal oils and fats (triglycerides) do
not dissolve in methanol (Schuchardt et al., 1998). However, monoglycerides and
diglycerides (partly converted vegetable oil) are partially soluble.
the confirmation for biodiesel can be done by washing the upper layer with warm water and allowing it to settle. The washed biodiesel can be tested using 3/27 test. If the mixture is completely homogeneous with no deposits,it confirms the complete conversion of oil into biodiesel.
As far as those three layers are concerned, top most layer with lowest viscosity is unreacted methanol, middle layer with color similar to that of oil is your biodiesel and bottom layer is glycerol. since your catalyst seems to be heterogeneous, the third layer which will be beneath biodiesel is your catalyst.
