As I know the quantum dots surface is completely passivated with ligands. While forming core shell quantum dots, the ligands need to be detached from the surface for the shell material to be attached to the core. Are the ligands labile during the synthesis or is there any other mechanism involved?

I have worked on QDs Cd-Se core and ZnS shell stabilized by a polymer (POAMA) Poly Acrylomethylacetate) and we face all the different scenari: QD + ligand, QD without ligand, Core + ligand but never Shell + ligand without Core. Synthesis conditions are key factor but the parameter(s) controlling the stability of the QD + ligand not well identify. We are working on it nd hope to progress soon....
