We are thinking of moving our networks lab from OPNET Modeler to NetSim. How does the feature set of NetSim compare to coursework? Is the learning curve steep for instructors and students? What online resources are available?
Visit https://www.tetcos.com/netsim-acad.html and you will find a selection of pre-built experiments. Each experiment is accompanied by a detailed PDF guide.
For further exploration, look through these ResearchGate discussions:
NetSim covers a lot of wireless technologies, including 5G, LTE, WiFi, IoT, WSN, Vehicular ad hoc networks, and Satellite communications. Some of these technologies were not available in OPNET. Hence, for coursework, consider adding wireless content and phasing out older topics such as LAN, token ring, ATM, etc.
One good thing about NetSim, is their tech support. So do contact them (via website or email) for assistance.
NetSim YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/tetcos) has a number of helpful videos. Our students use the 'NetSim Learn' and 'NetSim Features' playlists. NetSim knowledgebase (https://support.tetcos.com/support/home) has lots of Q & A We had course labs not on their in-built list of lab experiments. Their technical staff helped us develop the procedure and documentation for these labs.
The in-built experiments (in www.tetcos.com/downloads/v14/NetSim_Experiment_Manual.pdf) are divided into Level-1, Level-2, and Level-3. L2 and L3 experiments have mathematical components; they would be suitable for senior undergrad or postgrad courses.
For a set of experiments focused on 5G, see https://www.tetcos.com/downloads/v13.1/5G-Advanced-Experiments-with-NetSim.pdf
We found their cloud licensing solution to be useful. This allows students to install NetSim on their personal laptops, eliminating the restriction of only using lab machines.
Riverbed/OPNET have stopped support and we are looking to conduct labs for our under-graduate students using NetSim including Enterprise network performance analysis, DDoS attacks, Ipv4 vs. IPv6, Vehicular networks, and Wi-Fi. Can some one point me to the resources I can look at for each of these topics in Netsim?
Section 4.7 of https://www.tetcos.com/downloads/v14/Internetworks.pdf, has an example explaining “Configuring IP addresses, subnets and applying firewall rules based on subnets using Class B IP addresses” Section 2 of https://www.tetcos.com/downloads/v14/Advanced-Routing.pdf covers VLAN For a simple DDOS based cyber attack see https://support.tetcos.com/support/solutions/articles/14000141596-simulating-simple-ddos-attacks-in-an-iot-network-in-netsim
