What I have read from some publications is that gamma-alumina can be synthesized from aluminium hydroxide through Boehmite formation as an intermediate compound. Is there any direct method to synthesize this compound?
You can separate the boehmite-gel by filtration, wash until neutral pH and after calcination. Unfortunately, is very hard to differentiate the gamma alumina from other phases by XRD, but several differences like surface area or acidity can help to characterize the gamma alumina.
No one aluminium trihydroxide gives gamma-alumina directly. Only oxo-hydoxo aluminium with boehmite structure. It can be prepared directly from an alumina salt solution. Please, see

The best way to be sure that you prepared gamma- alumina is its further calcination at 1000 C for 2 h. Thus formed pure theta alumina can be easy recognized by XRD analysis.
