Ion beam induced deformation (elongation along ion track) of metal nanoparticles embedded in silica has been observed, if the size of nanoparticles exceeds the ion track size. Does that mean there will be no elongation of smaller nanoparticles? In certain cases, elongation of nanoparticles of size smaller than the ion track size are also observed. Since there can't be altogether different mechanisms for different size ranges, how can we understand the mechanisms of ion induced deformations.
