We ( Higher Education) started with Zoom, then Google Meet, and this term we will be using more updated and smarter system MS TEAM to make online teaching more participatory and engaging and interesting. We have already received training from the IT department on the use of MS TEAM. We are prepared with our teaching and learning resources too. We are exploring and confronting various advantages and limitations. The journey of online learning accelerated during the lockdown due to COVID19. Initially, it went smoother but now the problem is arousing due to network and server issues. There are technical issues. But its high time to go with open sources that are compatible and are available offline as well. The app like Jitsi also works very well with low bandwidth. The moodle Gnomio LMS is excellent and may satisfy the need for remote teaching and learning. The teacher as the facilitator has to be critical and very creative. The creativity of organising and implementation learning has to be contextual and according to the teacher has to play multidimensional roles effectively.
We also started with ZOOM but them we used BigBlueButton and I prefer it more than ZOOM, more functions... And, of course, MOODLE... Agree with previous commentary, all this situation makes us (teachers) more creative and cometentive)) Best wishes, colleges!
Use the break out rooms in Teams. Make your teaching interactive by getting students into small groups and allow them to have separate meetings in the breakout rooms, all working on material that you have provided. 'Hop' between the different breakout rooms yourself or use a teaching team to supervise. You can also ask students to do pre work and discuss this in class online, and/or give follow up activities which are discussed in the following session. It's all about engaging students and creating an as interactive experience as possible.

Tabassum, the challenges created by the Coronavirus pandemic has necessitated the use of alternative technologies such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, among others. In order to facilitate greater interaction not only between the tutor and students but also between the students themselves, the use of breakout areas/spaces and other interactive functions provided by the technologies has been found to be quite useful in the sharing and creative use of knowledge, exercises and other teaching and learning materials. Interesting and challenging times call for innovative solutions.
Dear Tabassum Ferdous, I think it's a good discussion, because it is very important at this moment to keep students engaged in remote activities. I agree with the comments John Mendy, Abdelkader Mohamed Elsayed, Antje Cockrill, Irina Zhirova and Vidyanand Sambhaji Khandagale and I would like to highlight the importance of listening to the students, giving them the opportunity to participate in activities and discussions, but above all, a space for them to express their feelings and concerns about the current situation. In the sense that it welcomes them so that they realize that the teacher cares about them and not only to teach, but concerned with their personal development as well.
Using technology in remote teaching and learning is a norm now. However, students need to be engaged in order to learn. The usual practice is to place them in groups and give them some activities and hope for the best. Unfortunately, it does not work out as students do not know how to engage collaboratively to learn effectively. They need trainings. Secondly, turn your assessment activities into learning activities as students use marks as extrinsic motivation to learn (sad).
For now we are still preparing for the printing of our Self Learning Modules as we embark for modular distance learning modality of teaching, we can not go on online teaching because of the internet stability of our community and our school is located in slum area of the province...its poor! but we tried our best to deliver the basic education that is accessible to every learner
I think that online teaching method is most beneficial for students, but the way to teach online will be effective depends on current information technology, but in my country, IT is not applicable yet. With this online teaching, students cannot practice this modern form. So, I think it's better to foster better online teachers.
As per my experience, the use of a graphics tablet helps tremendously. It is an almost perfect, affordable substitute for the in-class whiteboard and can greatly enhance the online class experience of both the teacher and student.
If the students are actively taking notes using a pen and paper, it can reduce their mind wandering.
By allocating some marks for class participation, student participation can be increased. Some time can be allocated strictly for class discussion; especially, towards the end of the class when the students can suffer from information overload.
Most have said to make the learning process interactive. Very good. And how does it become interactive? Students must ASK QUESTIONS of each other. They should come to the session with questions written down that they want answered. Also write down questions you expect others to ask and be prepared to answer them. by writing down your answer. Centuries of teacher preaching has not instilled a knowledge of how to CREATE an interactive learning process. A prepared mind is a learning mind. Memorization is not as good as impromptu discussion. Writing down and thinking BEFORE the discussion gets the information through your brain twice just waiting for the third time to say it in the group discussion. Repetition puts the information into your neural pathway. Science has shown that three or more trips using the same neural pathway makes memory possible. But it is not a question of memorizing the information but saying and hearing it in different ways that makes the memory possible using MORE neurons than memorization.
To make the courses interesting and engaging I use the discussion boards with salient questions that each student is to answer and then offer comments on what at minimum two of their classmates have stated. It keeps the discussion going and offers an opportunity for students to agree or disagree with their classmates, broaden their thinking on a topic while giving their perspective on a particular subject. The discussion boards are limited to a week.
I also use graphics germane to the topics which invite conversation. Use a bit of creativity, while also allowing students to draw on their life's experiences on the various topics!

Thank you. Excitement works well in life and learning. Again. Questions and answers help. Sometimes questions and no answers are necessary to get your brain blood flowing. Remember though that a difference must be questioned and understood before the difference is in your mind AND usable in the expression of your knowledge.

We are using a variety of systems (Zoom, TEAMS, phonecalls) to stay in touch with students, but primarily use MS Teams. In addition, we are moving to a blended learning approach to include some face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous learning, flipped learning where appropriate. Personally, I see this new way of working as a way to enable us to listen to our students and be more responsive to formative feedback.
Neil Mosley at Cardiff University has led some great webinars on building an online community with students, definitely worth reaching out and checking if they have been recorded for future viewing.
Making remote teaching and learning more interesting and engaging requires a deeper level of analysis because we have varied forms of remoteness. In some part of the world, only teachers not trained, somewhere students' background is very poor and in some parts of the world, internet access is lacking. In our office, we are using MS Team to teach the teachers . The teachers are being sent videos, assignments, questions prior to the discussion. The teachers get scope to have prior study of the topic. This makes the discussion interactive and effective. The use of PPT in MS team also brings success to the discussion.

In this pandemic, our country ,Myanmar, Educational Society try to introduce online and blended learning for students. Most of time in former is face to face learning. National Education Policy Committed draw the policy and give online training to Universities teaching staff how to prepare and use LMS tools. For remote area, send videos lectures as hard copy.
It is obvious that this period shows the necessity of the remote learning environment. But many factors need to be considered for this to be working well. If teachers are well facilitated, what of accessibilty of students to the interne. Students also need to be trained on how to use online environment. These are very important to take care for having remote learning area interesting and engaging.
I been using strategies from cooperative learning and based solving problems, look for Jigsaw activities, they are very engaging and help to the formation of project based activities, ask students to form their own groups and create their own virtual meetings in zoom or Google meet, they will have to share the link with you, so you can check that they are really working in a project. Besides, some of your teaching content can be studied autonomously.
We have focused on students and faculty during this pandemic and how to best work under these conditions. As I have had conversations with people about teaching under these circumstances I question if parents have been considered! Not only from the point of access but of their literacy and language skills and their ability to assist their child with their studies. I think assumptions have been made without asking and/or providing support for the parents/caregivers in these times of at home teaching and learning!

Research in the area of students' engagement shows that 1) Engagement happen when active student-centred teaching happens, rather than when passive learning used. 2) Discussion in small groups and enabling students to contribute, search for information, construct knowledge and debate issues facilitate engagement. 3) Distribution of roles and understanding the process to be used and having ground rules to ensure the creation of a healthy environment enhances student's engagement. 4) On the contrary passive learning, and lack of organisation and students' contribution, and when difficult concepts are not explained, and there is no time for questions.
Also, Tabassum Ferdous I would like to add to my previous answer by giving few examples. Use techniques of active learning such as Case-Based Learning, PBL, Flipping Classroom. 2) Distribute tasks and responsibilities on the students, 3) Be a facilitator rather than the source of information.
Sammy's third point: Be a facilitator rather than the source of information is an excellent description of the instructor and any student who understands that the process of learning is more important than the content. When you learn the process you can insert your mind into any content and get something new out of it. The learning process includes the following steps; wake up your brain and be open to new connections then put what your think is new in your mind into your own words, ask questions to fill in idea gaps to form a complete idea then reflect to see if you have done a good job of making the new idea understandable to your self. Next is to connect this new idea to others in your mind. Next is to talk to others to see if they share your old ideas and welcome your new connected ideas. Next you have to find a place for you new ideas in your memory. Then search for other people to see if you can expand yours and their ideas about what each of you think is new. Finally you need to use your new idea to guide what you are doing and help others discover how your idea adds to their understanding. Teaching is the LAST part of learning.
It all depends on the maturity of students. Students can make or break this experience. They determine and dictate the dynamics of remote learning.

A very TIMELY question for T&L in this age of COVID-19. As for myself, I combine the use of multiple apps and platforms to up my game... and, more importantly, to keep my 200+ young degree students engaged!
a. Main platform: G/Classroom to manage timetables, attendance lists, project submissions, etc.
b. Meeting tool: G/Meet for synchronous teaching (but I spend a max of only 20-30 minutes per session), online meeting is too taxing!
c. Video media: YouTube learning, commenting on videos I created.
d. 360-degree VR expriences: YouTube and VeeR for exposure to key skills, contents created since 2019.
e. Presentation tools: eMaze for remote presenting and sharing, 24/7.
f. Explainer videos: Cartoons, 60-second explainers using Reallusion software, BiteAble and Canva for Education.
g. Engagement apps: Genially for short tests and self-tests.
h. Social media tool: Twitter for immediate sharing of T&L information and tasks, my students are almost ALWAYS online and ready to respond.
In my opinion, to present a modeling of abstract concepts through simulators, also present videos, movies and animations related to current issues in different subjects to be analyzed and discussed among all students with the moderation of the teacher, through the different web platforms currently used for teaching. It is also interesting to promote activities where students are active participants in their own learning.

Remote teaching nowadays, via online tools, can be very interesting and engaging to students, actually even more than in class teaching.
You have a wide range of illustrative tools to help you present your course materials; for instance, Share Screen, whiteboard in zoom, you can also show some videos, refer to and access online literature or websites on-spot,,,etc.
Keeping in touch with your students is also very critical, be there for them if they need some help and answer their questions, students will appreciate your efforts and engage more.
This question is very important, especially at this time. We suddenly found ourselves facing a very big challenge, which is e-learning. But the institution in which I work is ready, from the first day, to apply via the blackboard, which was used in teaching, but not 100%. The institution start to conduct training courses and a hotline for us in order to overcome the difficulties facing teachers and students. It was a great experience

I have applied "Gamification" into my online courses in pharmacy school and found that it was impressively effective in student engagement.
Game elements which I used are: meaningful story or specific context with role assignment for my students, competitions, and reward system (e.g., points and badges to represent their achievement).
