How can we know that a particular SME is an entrepreneurial SMEs? Especially in the qualitative study, how do we understand the entrepreneurship of SMEs?
Hi Vanitha, there is no one best way. Entrepreneurship is contextul and there is no universal theory that can be used to operationalize entrepreneurship either. Please also refer to my JBV article to get an idea.
Often the entrepreneurial orientation scale is used, which measures (on an individual or group or company level): proactive behaviour, risk taking, opportunity seeking etc. (Variable differ a bit depending on context / author).
Dess & Lumpkin (1996; 2011); / Slovin / Covin & Wales (2012) etc:

Hi Vanitha. The SME that can be considered entrepreneurial in nature should have innovative aspects, methods and approaches to its performance. Otherwise an SME without innovation is just a 'business firm' . Please refer to JOSEPH A. SCHUMPETER'S PERSPECTIVE ON INNOVATION. Entrepreneurship basically is 'coming up with a new idea, process, etc' which = innovation
There is no single answer to this question, as Sarath noted. I would say that there may be two clues to determining who is more entrepreneurial: 1) the employer/non-employer divide, i.e., if you are a sole proprietor, you are more likely to be less entrepreneurial than an employer, but this may change over time when you start employing someone; 2) opportunity-driven entrepreneurs versus necessity-driven entrepreneurs, with the latter being less entrepreneurial or even treated as employees who are self-employed (not entrepreneurial at all). So, context is important, but you can look at the literature to find the two tips I suggested. I hope this was helpful!
hi, I think an entrepreneurial firm doesn't just come up with innovations. it implements them. Innovation must meet the needs of society. The entrepreneur discovers these needs. then he satisfies them. For this, the entrepreneur receives a profit, satisfaction from work, or sets his own rules of the game. It depends on the motivation of the entrepreneur.
On ' ordinary SMEs' and ' entrepreneurial SMEs' , see a study by Reboud and Mazzarol (2011). Most SMEs will NOT have growth ambitions. (also Davidsson). Those that have, (sometimes called gazelles, born globals, scale ups, frontier firms etc) need an innovative supplier base. See e.g. our recent submission to the New Zealand Productivity Commission. FEEDBACK IS WELCOME. Technical Report Submission for the NZ Productivity Commission (NZPC) on Fron...

Especially in the qualitative study, if you are conducting interviews. You can ask some questions at the beginning of the interviews . the entrepreneur assert on his innovative new idea in the market. you can also search for the entrepreneurs through governmenatl or non governmenatl funding agencies that make specail progrmmes only for entrepreneurs.
To know whether SME is entrepreneurial or not, we have to apply certain tests.
To be entrepreneurs, people are required to possess certain personal entrepreneurial competences (PECs). Though there are various PECs, the one promoted by UNCTAD (Empretec Programme
The Entrepreneur’s Guide) is the most commonly used one. In this guideline, ten PECS were identified and grouped in to three clusters as follows:
1. Planning cluster
i. Goal-setting
ii. Information-seeking
iii. Systematic planning and monitoring
2. Opportunity-seeking and initiative
i. Persistence
ii. Fulfilling commitments
iii. Demand for efficiency and quality
iv. Taking calculated risks
3. Power cluster
i. Persuasion and networking
ii.Independence and self-confidence
Each of the ten PECs have sub clusters; for further understanding refer to the guide.
To know if a given SME is entrepreneurial, you have to test whether the people working in it possess the PECs or not. Higher values show that the SME is more entrepreneurial......
