I have made some composites using Silica nano-fillers, their tensile strength decrease, but their modulus is increasing simultaneously. How can we explain this phenomenon?
Elastic modulus is a bulk property, so adding a stiffer material increases it.
Tensile strength is not a bulk quantity because it is determined by local defects. There are many possible explanations why tensile strength is reduced, for example due to defects or residual stresses introduced during processing of the material or due to stress concentrations at stiff particles.
On single sample it is hard to predict the behavior, on addition on nano particles. For generic approach one has to cast a no.of specimen to see the average trend. Moreover the activity of Nano particles within the paste is still needed to be addressed, it is not the case that one take the Microscopic images and furnish any reason for the said issue.
Nanoparticles possess the big module of elasticity and naturally their additive leads to increase of the module of material by "the rule of mix". With a high probability they play a role of defects and therefore reduce limit deformation, so and material strength. Interestingly how many have added nanoparticles
