Theoretically a step has all frequencies, so it would be enough. Same thing with white noise (all frequencies). Clearly for sinusoids you would have to apply several, to sweep the frequency range you are interested in (that is, a single sinusoid is clearly not enough). In practice a combination of sinusoid, step and white noise will be adequate. How much / how many? This, I am afraid, you will have to learn with experience.
