Im doing my project on dam foundation interaction problem under seismic conditions in sap2000. I would like to know how do we assign the water pressure on the structure.
Also how to decide the link elements as soil structure interface(whether non linear elastic or plastic)??
please help me with your advice

i think you go wrong and if you use the Sap to model the dam you can not find the excat and correct results
my opinion is you can use Flac Abaqus Ansys softwares . Sap is not suitable for Dam structure

For Hydrostatic loading follow the below mentioned prcedure or you can refer to this youtube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzjKWvw9W8I
1. You need to define a load pattern named hydrosatic load as dead load with zero weight multiplier in SAP 2000
2. Then select the U/S side element and in assign go to joint pattern where you need to enter your values of pressure in the equation P=Ax+By+Cz+ D, where constants A and B are zero and C= -10 and D= (10*Depth of water), by identifying the direction of local axis in which hydrostatic pressure is to be applied and select the surface as top or bottom depending on the direction and click Ok! you will now see the loads are applied in linear manner.
3. Now again select the U/S side element and in assign go to area loads and then in Surface pressure select the new load pattern created for hydrostaic load, click on joint element, multiplier is 1, Replace existing load and Ok .
4. Your hydrostatic load is now applied in linear manner.
For Hydrodynamic load follow same procedure except it will be a trapezoidal loading changing the constants of joint pattern.
