At undergraduate level, a dental student learns many psychomotor skills as well as the relevannt theory to practice as general dental practitioner. I would like my dental colleagues who are in teaching profession to share their views on effective assessment of dental students' comptence.

I feel that the education program should be a continuous self evaluative process in addition to specific evaluation. A problem based learning with continuous evaluation of performance and change in various competences of the student would be the best way forward for this type of evaluation. We will be able to understand exactly, how the competencies of students change with each problem he solves. A periodic knowledge based assessment may be used to supplement this type of continuous evaluation.

You are very right. Continuous step by step asaessment is the best way to evaluate a dental student's competence. For example, once a student is found to have learnt making class I cavity, he / she should be allowed to prepare Class II and so on.I think you mean the same. Isn't that?
I am talking about evaluation of broader skill sets. For example, after a proper pre clinical procedure based training; a further patient based training or problem based training may be better than procedure based training. Like it would be better that instead of teaching class I and class II (procedure based) it would be better to teach how to diagnose and treat asymptomatic lesions of dental hard tissues (which will involve all kind of restorations) and symptomatic lesions (endodontic). The quotas may be based on this type of teaching. Evaluation may be done based on rubrics that evaluate various skill sets (diagnosis, treatment planning, communication skills, patient satisfaction, quality of treatment provided and a theory viva) as the student handles the patient. This may be supplemented with theory exams.
