I am studying in my Ph.D. thesis about kraft lignin. I want to show the desulfurization effect, and I applied to Evdokimov et al. 2018 research procedure. But Lignins nearly fully dissolved in DMF. How ı can separate lignin from the DMF?
Boiling point of DMF is too high (ca. 150 oC) for simple evaporation. So, why do not you exchange DMF with a miscible solvent, with low boiling point?
Add a DMF miscible solvent (e.g. methanol) to the lignin/DMF mixture, then centrifuge the mixture and discard the supernatant. Finally, dry the product!
Just put water in excess on the solution, and so, the lignin will be on suspension. After, a filtration or centrifuge will separate the technical lignin from the solution.
The principle is simple: when you put water, you change the solubility parameter of the medium, making lignin precipitate.
Another possibility is rotoevaporation. You can use it in order to low the pressure vapour and evaporate the DMF at low temperatures.
