I think I have a problem -- I'm an experimentalist, and one of my students appears to be a conceptualist. In the formulation of our new model, I keep wanting him to try a first iteration (of anything), and he keeps remodeling over and over again without giving me any insight into this vague and abstract problem that we have (specifically, we're modelling a software development process as a Markov model).

He's driving me nuts in that he won't create a preliminary model (no matter how bad), collect some data, and refine it from there. Several sub-questions...

1 - Do conceptualists look at those of us who are experimentalists as idiots who run around blind?

2 - Since I can't conceptualize the model without any initial data, how do I advise him?
