I am looking to measure the distance covered by a moving water front from a video of several still images I recently obtained from a waterflood experiment. Specifically, I want to track the front (and measure the distance covered) as it advances across the length of the image.
I have attached a series of images to add some clarity.
Are there ways to do this in matlab?

I would like to elaborate the answer and the choice of algorithm in more details. In your case, I would say to use the KLT algorithm in python --> uses shiTomasi algorithm to detect feature/corner points and then uses Lukas-Kanaade method to determine optical flow. The KLT should work fine and is very fast.

Once you determine the feature points and optical flow, you'll have a optical flow vector of x and y coordinates. And then you can measure the Euclidean distance between these coordinates and divide by number of frames to get, for example, how many pixels have a particular feature point move per frame.
you can simply do color based segmentation, and check the leftmost pixels in each frame. this will give you some rough numbers to get started.
