I went through my first harvest of the rice and although I got some seeds from the WT plants, most of them were initiated (i.e. the pollen made it in etc.), but then they were aborted and the seeds were empty and brown, dried.
Is there anything I can do to help the plants to fill the seeds?
The rice is ecotypes Hwanyoung, grown in greenhouse. Shall I stop watering them and let them dry? If so, at what point?
I know, unfortunately that's a little difficult in here, since everybody's growing long-day plants (barley, tomatoes), but in the growth chamber the plants didn't start flowering yet, while the same old plants in greenhouse are already flowering. That's just illogical, because it's too cold for them and long day, so exactly improper conditions.
@To my mind plant can be checked for male sterility randomly. Sometimes, thermo-genetic male sterility related to temperature may affect the seed setting and viability. These type of plants can be removed just at the beginning of the flowering stage to ensure the production of viable seeds. Other abiotic factors may also have their effect on seed viability.
thank you Dr. Sidhu, however, as I wrote, the seeds were set, I could've seen to be there small, dry, brown seeds, but they were dry and empty, so I could crush them with my fingers easily
@ OK, as I can understand that you have grown plants in green house in pots containing soil. If it is so, please analyze the soil chemical properties for deficiency if there is any. if the ecotype you are using is from some other place of your experiment, it may take time to adapt.

It is mentioned in the question that rice ecotype were grown in green house.
Take help from tissue culture.....embryo rescue and also check your temperature and humidity conditions.

Most important reasons for what called is sterility.
1. This is mainly due to insufficiency of nitrogen and potassium.
2. It is common in case of late emerged tillers as a result of intra competition
3. If panicle initiation, panicle emergence coincides with coldness and cloudiness
