I want to create a database in which I can enter information about plants and track not only species information but also photo and ecology information.
I have a lot of interest in the study of plant diversity. I am doing research work in Plant Taxonomy in a particular area.
My idea is to create a database for flora in my project area, where it easy to study and review any flora inside the project area at any time. In a book chapter it takes more time to do a flora search, and its difficult. I kindly request to all of the viewers, is there any related database of flora? Reviews and suggestions send back to me.

Going by your explanation and what you intend to do, it is my view that no ready-made database of plants will work for you as desired. The best they can do is probably to assist in the identification of some of your plants. If I got your message correctly, what you want is to document ALL or MOST of the plants you intend to (or are studying) and have their features ( species info, photo, etc) stored in a database from where you can readily (automatically) extract data and information in an interactive manner by the use of the computer. I strongly suggest that you contact a programmer (who is versed in Expert Systems development) who will develop a software that will suit your specific need (i.e. after you might have compiled all the botanical/ ecological data as necessary).
You will need to give the programmer EVERY DETAIL of how you want the proposed application to function. For example is it that "as you supply the species name, the machine should ask you (the user) some questions on what you require about it, which it displays as soon as the user responds" or "is it that the machine should be made to recognize portions of the plant (e.g leaf surface) and automatically displays its name and other information". e .t.c. ?
Phil Markey should be able to assist you. But as I stated, he or any other programmer for that matter will need the details of what you want.

One of my M.Phil scholar already done the database work on medicinal plants of Marunduvalmali hills. Her dissertation is may be available in our Univ. library. Her name is S. Selvi, Dept, of Botany, S.T. Hindu College Nagercoil-2 1991. In addition to that pl. refer Current Science Vol.84(1): 10 January 2003.
