I really think that yhe best way is to do oral excam (and very small group seminars) with students - Yes it will take a long time to understand student (or any human being), and it is not very objective. But then You can really see/hear the insight to another human and evaluate their philosophy and way of thinking

Your question assumes that the existence of a Professional decorum accepted towards the management of patients across all disciplines.

This is indeed the case in Medicine and Dentistry where we assume a significant Ethical and Moral obligation towards the treatment of all our patients (the old Hippocratic Oath.

Prof Lionel Green Thompson a specialist in the field of Health Care Education (specifically Medical and allied student learning) has through publications has demonstrated that professionalism and the evaluation of a students mannerism and the way they conduct themselves can be accurately measured against a common Professional code and that the results of such subjective observations can be regarded as reliable if enough observers (examiners ) are included.

Thus it is the duty of all those who teach (didactic or otherwise ) to observe assist and guide our fellow to be colleagues to behave and adopt a code which reflects the agreed upon Ethical standards as are deemed acceptable by our peers.

It means we should develop strong feed back system to evaluate the students mannerism and conduct. The feedback should be obtained from not only teachers but from students' colleague, patients they treat and non-teaching staff of the institution whom the students meet and interact on routine bases. Is that what you mean?

Do you have Community Dental Health component in your curriculum? Students can do actual research and community dental education through this course and will enjoy and get connected with the actual world.

In my opinion, structured Feedback provided by different persons involved in the "clinical Setting" could provide good means of measuring those comptencies. During the Feedback process not only summative Evaluation can be given from different Points of view (techer, peer, Patient, staff) but also formative Evaluation, so the Student can evolve and Focus on developing certain aspects of soft skills.

Yes, you are very right. Strong feedback system from various head of teaching departments of the college as well as non teaching departments and patients can help us assessing the students for following the given code of conduct or not. But do you think learning of these soft skills should be in formative manner? If yes, then how can we quantify this learning process because formative exam requires marks and grades.

What we have tried is to evaluate, if the Student has reached a certain Level of competency (e.g. patient counselling skill at postgraduate Level - meaning that the counselling Performance of the Student is as expected from a Dentist working in practice). We evaluate, if it is under, at or above that Level. The combination of summative an formative Evaluation is really effective, since students give their best to gain a good Level and have "open ears" for the Content of the formative Feedback. You may argue that this Evaluation is subjective - but grades in oral examinations etc. are also quite dependend on the examiners expectations.

No doubt, formative and summative  evaluation is very effective and gives good results. But patient counselling is one aspect to be assessed. What about other skills like  research abilities,leadership qualities, punctuality, confidence, motivation,self-reliance etc. How can we evaluate them in formative evaluation.
