I think it is a good idea to integrate informal trade into public spaces, but it might not be a good idea to "integrate" it into the design of public spaces because the nature of informal sector is beyond planning or design. Once it becomes "integrated" into the design of public spaces, it may no longer belong to the informal sector.

For example, allocating spaces for informal trade in public space design, but then as you say, it will no longer be informal as this will mean it is formalised.

How do they do it in your local context?

When designing your public spaces, include (and hide) water bibs and electrical outlets. I have in the past included, behind the access plate in street lights, electrical outlets, which can be used for festivals and events. This infrastructure does gets rid of the need for loud and dirty generators. I have also seen public address systems wired into light poles and hidden behind access for plug and play use for special events.
