In his opinion, Industry 4.0 can contribute to the evolution of Power Electronics.
I think the presence of new class of applications is always a driving force of the advancement in general and particular in its specific applications. So, in case of presence of need of new power devices with new ratings that may not be satisfied with the existing power device spectrum motivates the power device vendors to produce these new devices. The need for medium power high speed power devices for power control in the industry led previously to the production of new power devcies such as the power MOST and the IGBT. It was one day it is believed that the MOS transistors are only low power devices till Siemens came and invested in the vertical power MOST with success. There is now the new compound semicondcutor materials that are capable to work at higher power densities and the power devices made from them may be superior than those made of silicon.
Smart power ICs is the other branch of advancements to integrate the power devices with the the digital circuits.
There will be tremendous demand on the power devices for the renewable energy systems for power conditioning and control.

Energy from renewable sources could be given to the public grid. When it happens you would need a full time measuring of the energy produce from your source and that taken from the grid, by this system you can define a method to regain your contribution.
