More and more part time or contingent faculty are having to do research outside of a university or research center. Being unaffiliated can cause problems in publishing or grant writing as editors and funders want to insure data collection and research meet international standards for ethical treatment of human subjects (through institutional research oversight boards).
One way is to partner with a colleague who works for an institution that has an IRB.
Would you be able to get accreditation from the IRB if you are not part of the institution (but your co-author is)?

If one uses secondary data, does one need IRB approval?
You can also submit it to an independent IRB. But that will cost money. I would ask around. There may be an IRB associated with the group you are studying, such as a city health department. Partnering with a colleague who works for an institution with an IRB may be the best way to go.
Ruth, as far as my current campus goes, secondary data (if it is public) does not need IRB approval. However, if data was collected for a previous study, there needs to be approval from the original IRB for use or you need to get reapproved for the new use.
Another grey area is if I have data from work I do with a company as an independent researcher, can I use that information if I go through my institution's IRB?
This is something I am wondering as well. From my limited inquiries, it seems that even private IRB companies require sponsorship. It is very difficult to navigate and I would so appreciate any advice.
