I would like to know how you guys use AIBN for cross linking? Should I just mix a certain amount of the monomer and AIBN and let them interact at a specific temperature? What are the tips for the reaction?
AIBN is one initiator, which can initiate the free radical polymerization and I don't think it can work as a crosslinker. In polymer chemistry, the crosslinker should have at least two functionality (such as C=C). The AIBN can be decomposed at 65-80 degree C.
You can use free radical initiator to create macro-radicals on the polymer surface, which can self crosslink afterwards. See for crosslinking PE using BPO or DCP. There are a lot of reports on radical-initiated crosslinking.
AIBN is a poor choice of reagent if you want to form macromolecular radicals from existing polymers, the fact it forms a radical which is centred on a carbon bearing two methyls and a cyano group will make it nice and stable (low energy), thus is it less likely to be able to abstract a hydrogen atoms from a polymer such as PP or PS than a oxygen centred radical formed from the thermoylsis of an organic peroxide.
