I need to catch some Asian Openbill Storks to track their movement. Does anyone know how to catch them. This birds like feeding in shallow water areas and roosting on trees.
Maybe you can ask your question on the facebookgroup Bird banding and Ringing (https://www.facebook.com/groups/birdringing/?fref=ts (it is a closed group) ? I think it would be helpfull to get them on a feeding place, where you can trap them with a canon net, woosh net, big thunnel traps or walk-in cage's. The last is used in the Netherlands for white stork:
You can try set up traps or mist nets to catch them. We used mist nets to catch shorebirds on shallow water and wetlands. You can apply Satellite and Radio telemetry to track them
We have good experience with the capture of herons at their nests. We use special cages and the birds always returned to their clutch.Maybe this also works with these storks.
Hi Liu, I have experience in catching Black Storks in India. We used clamp trap to catch them. The clamp trap is remotely operated mechanical trap and very effective in catching birds like storks and herons. It is safe for birds and very effective. You can communicate with Mr. Lubomir Peske ([email protected]) who has more than 40 years of experience in catching storks, houbara, raptors and many other bird species. You can also visit this website to know more about Black Stork migration project. http://www.rozhlas.cz/odysea/angl
Maybe you can contact Libor Peske - expert on wildlife tracking over the world - which tracking black storks, eagles, ibis and other species. here is a contact to him - [email protected] is known for the ability to trap rare species in wildlife.
