By seeing its current distribution you can analyse the effect of slots. Position and size of slots affect antenna performances (like frequency, gain, efficiency, polarisation, and directionality ).
Ya whatever you said is correct... But, for the required characteristics, I need to add slots (means before looking at the current distribution, I should know what will be the effect of slots).
It depends on your requirement. For more details go through some literature related to patch antennas with slots. Generally, slots in patch and ground plane are used for bandwidth enhancement and miniaturization.
I think, a nice way to look (analyze and study) at it is through characteristic mode analysis (CMA) of your slotted patch or planar monopole antenna, which is infact studying the eigen current modes of the structure, but the method lends itself to a nice systematic approach...
Slots are basically used for Bandwidth enhancement and for compactness of antenna.
The antenna is designed at some particular resonating frequency which gives some bandwidth then addition of slot overlaps the fundamental mode of antenna and creates higher order mode which overlaps the original bandwidth which gradually increases the overall bandwidth of the antenna.
