I am trying to spike my soil (9kg) with a 10mmol/kg concentration of Ethylenediamine-N,N′-disuccinic acid trisodium salt solution (EDDS). The EDDS stock solution has a volume of 100ml and a concentration of 35% (v/v). Considering the Molecular Weight of EDDS is 358.19, what mass/volume of the stock solution should i dilute to get a soil concentration of 10mmol/kg.
Are you sure the EDDS solution is 35% (v/v), not (w/v)? If it were 35% (w/v), it would be 35 g/100 ml = 350 g/L. Divide that by the molecular mass of 358.19 g/mol to get the concentration = 0.977 mol/L. To spike the soil, you would need:
(9 kg) x (0.01 mol/kg)/(0.977 mol/L) =0.092 L = 92 ml of the stock solution.
If the EDDS solution is 35% (v/v), it implies that EDDS is a liquid. In that case, you need to know the density of the pure liquid to calculate the concentration. The Sigma catalog lists a product that is ~35%. It doesn't specify (v/v). I strongly suspect it is (w/v).
