Nitrate, which is dissolved in soil water, is transported through the unsaturated zone beneath the soil to the underlying aquifer by successive drainage events. These drainage events are the result of rainfall or irrigation that exceed the water holding capacity of the soil. This process can be modelled quite simply. Please ask more questions if I have not understood your original question.
