One way could be thu number of researchers with papers un JCR, and the umber of teachers with student assessment surveys overcome by those teachers.

There is not going to be one metric but by the nature of universities several are needed. One of the measures I think is missing especially around intellectual capital is systematic measures of the connections and a university's (more specially its staff's) centrality / influence within a network (attached is a graph for one university's influences and influencing from twitter).

(i) The knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship

(ii) The entrepreneurial university

thank you for the answers and ideas you have given me. indeed, measuring the value of universities is difficult and it is necessary to take into consideration a number of different metrics. And this is exactly the problem. It seems to be that we are submerged by information and data (and more to come with the big data revolution), but we are still lacking the knowledge of how it all fits together. Besides, each metric (whether for assessing the quality of teaching or research) or to value the impact on economic growth and social development use different methodologies and are difficult to compare.

Thank you Faris for the paper. It sheds some lights on a pressing issue for universities in the UK at the moment. I agree that there has to be an alignment between the BSC and other performance measures. However, the BSC is a limited instrument in many ways which can be used just to monitor performance rather than to develop it. There is a tendency to focus on the lead measures rather than invest in the lag measures.

and this brings me to Scott's answer which stresses the importance of looking at the network. Again, the size or nature of the network are necessary but not sufficient to measure, in this case, the value added of universities. Once again is how the information about the resources available are measured that matters here.

The literature talks much about knowledge management, but i think that, if we want to have a sense of how well each university is doing, we also need to include knowledge sustainability measures and knowledge waste (i feel much knowledge goes indeed to waste because of poor utilization).

Based on your research question Cristina, at least some degree of qualitative analysis is needed here. This could include some informal interviews with students in order to tease out their views on what cultural and intellectual values are and how they might be understood/"measured". Text analysis of interview transcripts could help to extract thematic patterns.

Estimada Cristina, eso depende de que tipo de Universidad quieres evaluar y para que quieres evaluarla.

Definitivamente coincido con usted, yo creo que como nos encontramos en el boom de las evaluaciones para las acreditaciones y como catedrático de del curso de evaluacion y acreditacion te puedo mencionar que muchas universidades se evalúan porque hay que acreditarse. Pero debe existir un Plan para que queremos evaluar una universidad. ¿para cumplir con un organismo de acreditación local ? ¿ o para mercadear nuestra universidad? 

Personalmente considero que lo que debemos evaluar es la capacidad de gestionar el conocimiento al margen de las otras evaluaciones y tener bien claro porque y para que hacemos tal o cual evaluacion para evitar el síndrome de evaluatitis institucional.

Esta obra que estoy anexando señala tipos de mediciones de la producción científica te menciona la importancia de los rankin mundiales de las universidades y cuales podrian ser las políticas publicas de un Estado  a fin de establecer Universidades de Rankin mundiales.

En el caso de nuestro país (Panamá), considero que se ha adelantado con un proceso de evaluación de las universidades públicas y privadas no obstante,  considero que debe haber existido un proceso de acompañamiento después del proceso inmediato de las evaluaciones de las universidades con su planes de mejoramiento institucional. al no existir un plan de seguimiento y acompañamiento puede que muchas universidades en vez de mejorar pueden no demuestren evidencias de mejoras.

How can you measure the value of universities? Possibly by the Mission statements a University has as their foundation for an educational institution, but this will be a very tall order.  Maybe look at several university' mission statements and locate a way in which the mission statements demonstrate value(s) in it.  Not sure if this will help, but may it will be an okay start ????  Remember this is just a segment of what you might research. 

I have some ideas about measuring the value of a certain university but these ideas need organization into a plausible systematic mechanism (something which I can do after less than 2 years when I retire). These ideas revolve about considering the students as the product of the university & focus upon measuring the quality of this product and its impact in terms of addition to economy & in other social aspects.

One of my fields (industrial chemistry) has influenced me in shaping up these ideas. No matter how "pretty" the installations look like in a chemical industrial plant, the customers will look, after all, into the quality of its products. By the same token, graduates of a university do reflect the "true" value of this institution.

Therefore, there has to be a smooth efficient way to follow up these graduates & to see how they performed after they said "farewell".    

You might consider how frequently graduates use the "buckets", tranches of knowledge they acquire from the university. E.g., we did a study of the frequency of K usage by our department's grad students. Interestingly, the knowledge they acquired from their least favorite class, they used the most often. We also looked at what the job market was willing to pay our grads (this second approach is fraught with many extraneous influences that are difficult to control for). I can send you our study if you like.
