I can think of the work by Richard Florida, for example, how gender orientation tolerance could be indicative of general social tolerance, which in turn is necessary for creative industries. I am not sure if Florida capitalizes on existing research or he uses his own metrics. Please find it out yourself in:
Florida, R. L. (2002). The rise of the creative class : and how it's transforming work, leisure, community and everyday life. New York: Basic Books.
Florida, R. L. (2008). Who's your city? : how the creative economy is making where to live the most important decision of your life. New York: Basic Books.
We are social animal & in our nature ,intolerance is not a healthy sign as it gets reflected in the family ,friendly & social environment .Because of the nature of the person intolerance has become his part life .The reason is very simple not because that he has no tolerance but he has not made any decisive part thru his conscious mind regarding the 5 elements which every human beings have but the person having intolerance has missed the train of his life.
Anger ,Pride,Ego ,Jealousy ,Attachment,Greed & such other action his conscious mind has not helping due to his very basic nature & as such intolerance has become the victim of his life.
Thanks for all these nice contributions. I am not looking for political or religious tolerance.
My issue is closer to Stouffer's tolerance index. For example, the World Values Surveys have questions for neighbours that people would like to live with; homosexuals, different religious groups or criminals.
Therefore, it is more like trust relationships, but not that strong. Just putting up with others.
What can be the possible determinants of that? I am thinking an SEM model utilizing political, religious, psychological and of course some SEC variables. What about that?
You might check the questions in the General Social Survey (GSS). The survey has been going on for decades with new questions added regularly. There are now over a thousand questions similar to those you interested in. You can download the codebook and data set free.
I wonder if it might be valuable to explore how supposed "tolerance" programs respond with in-kind intolerance towards dissenting views. For example, many businesses will fire people for their intolerance towards gay marriage yet in firing them are they not refusing to tolerate other perspectives?
it would certainly be a unique and interesting way to see how intolerance breeds more intolerance.
