The project-based method is great, but it's not appropriate for all content in the classroom because it wastes time. This method can be used for science lessons.

Do part of the project at home. This method can be used for some contents of the math course.

When students are involved in learning, the amount of learning increases.

Some concepts should be taught as group participation.

In my university General Chemistry class, I have observed that since using applications or web to balance chemical equations, calculate molecular masses, prepare solutions of certain concentrations, students are quite animated and combine manual calculations with the data obtained from the use of these applications, so much so that they spontaneously participate in the lesson

Project details of time span not mentioned here, then we can decide, it takes minimum 5 days for Mini project maximum 45 days for medium level project. CLASS room time can be extended to 3 hours or dedicated half day session in college. Part of your difficulty may be due to class size. If it is thirty or less, randomly ask a student a question and then transparently reward her/his willingness to answer, even if the answer is mistaken or incomplete. You can then ask the class in general if there are additions that would improve the answer. It may take a few classes, but once students realize they are rewarded for participating even if they are not completely correct, things should loosen up and they may even begin talking to one another.

I often started the course by asking if they wanted it to be more or less interesting. Obviously, everyone went for interesting, and then I made it clear that this was a shared endeavor and part of their responsibility was to contribute so that they would have an investment in making it interesting.

Educational drama techniques always enhance students' interest and gets them to involve in the educational procedure in an unforgettable way. You can use them either at the deggining of a lesson to get the students to involve, warm up and focus or as a method running a whole project.

It is hard to instill excitement about a requirement that will be tested, and has grades as punishment for trying if wrong. One ploy to get students involved is the Socratic Method, calling on them to answer leading questions that will progress to deeper understanding of the project. To be encouraging one must not punish the student for asking something not as incisive as one might hope, but using that opportunity to show that making an effort is seen as delightful and encouraged. When a student becomes engaged they may then competitively capitalize the conversation, and others must be called upon to prevent them taking over the discussion. Try asking them to talk with you after class, and give the others a chance to take part. This is a problem that vexed me, as without being called upon, many in the class were settled into passive listening and not actively engaged. It is a standard operating procedure for students, who are led to feel they cannot influence how they will be understood and evaluated other than the exam or essay scores.
