Hi, currently I'm studying about supercapacitors.
I got some CV curves from the SCs and I need to calculate the specific capacitance from those CV data.
But I don't know how to calculate the area inside the closed-loop of cyclic voltammetry.
There are only methods that calculate the area beneath the peak or something.
Is there anyone who can teach me how to integrate the area inside cyclic voltammetry?

Hi,
I don't know what software you usually use for plotting figures. I use Origin, and it's easy to integrate and obtain the area inside CV curves. Go to Analysis--Mathematics--Integrate, then you will get the area.
Or you can also get it from excel, just google it.

I agree with Dr. Chen. I also have used Microcal Origin (8.5) to evaluate the area covered by the CV curve and it is very easy.
There are another very old way to measure CV area. Just for fun:
1. Print your plot on a paper.
2. Cut from paper (that was used for printing) 1 cm2 and you have to weigh it on analytical balances (4 digits for gram after comma). It will be M1 value.
3. Cut CV curve from paper and define its weight. You will find Mx.
4. Surface area will be S= Mx/M1.
5. Define how much 1cm2 = mA*h/g(depend on your CV scale). It will be Ccm.
6. Capacity will be equal C= S*Ccm

Its too late to reply your question, regarding to your concern, we can take absolute area b/z it is the total area of the CV curve (+ve and _ve portion). The mathematical area is just the area of the +ve portion of the CV data. This is the main reason why we take absolute area instead of mathematical area ... hope it will help you
