My question is for identification of source of carbon which has accumulated at tidal zone which is on an intersection with the mangrove forest. The soils has been collected from the area fed by both the ocean tides and receiving litter sourced carbon from the mangrove trees. To quantify the amount per source, we need to know the amounts contributed to the soil. If anyone knows a method to identify the mangrove litter vs ocean tide driven carbon, I will be appreciated.

I checked and I think isotopic methods are the only one, unless you can identify litter fragment morphology and DNA. You could place litter traps and identify and partition the litter?

I think apart from the most relevant answer provided by Dr. Pegman, you could at least ascertain the source of suspended particulate matters in the form of phytoplankton assemblages that receive carbon from both the river run off and oceanic upwelling as well as the sediment regeneration by observing the prevalent coastal blooms through observation of IR irradiance and absorption at certain wave length and band width. Specific absorption and irradiance exist for specific assemblages of organisms. Also the carbon associated with the gelbstoff in the form of partially decomposed organelles could be traced using remote sensing techniques. A comparison between the present day data with the precedent and sporadic past events of eutrophication could lend some help to your cause.
