I plan to do some experiments on Quorum Sensing (QS) of microbes, so I need some AHL- signalling molecules. I can only buy C12-AHL on the market, but I still need the C8-AHL, C10-AHL, C14-AHL and C16-AHL. Could I synthetize these other AHLs using some common compounds in the lab?
The best you can do to get those standards is to grow bacteria which produce them and extract them. For example you can grow B. cepacia to get c8, and c6, and P. aeruginosa o P. putida to get OC10 and OC12. That would allow you to have them . You may then load them on a TLC and once developed, you may re-extract each spot to have a cleaner standard. I hope this advice may help.
Using TLC, I think it is still required to use the standard compound for comparing. Together with TLC you may use biomonitor organisms for AHLs detections (see Laura Steindler and Vittorio Venturi, 2007). However, if you need a certain amount of AHLs for your experiment it may difficult to get from TLC.

If you made homoserine lactone on the lab, you have to confirm using LC/MS/MS and NMR. I rcommanded to purchase on the reliable site.
