Spectrum has to do with the frequency domain analysis of time series. This has to do with the breaking up of time series into movements of different frequencies and amplitudes. Theoretically spectral analysis involves the Fourier transformation of the time series. The spectral density function sdf is the Fourier transform of the autocorrelation function acf.
The reverse process may be used to obtain the acf from a given sdf. From the acf a time series may be simulated.
