However, the following steps could be helpful. 1° Search prior art to find out if you have an invention: Espacenet or Patentscope are useful tools, 2° Determine the features of your invention in relation to the prior art, 3° Decide which countries you would like to protect (national, regional and international); this is dependent of a) the costs, b) your market strategy, c) infringement risks, 4° Choose a patent attorney to write the patent text, 5° When starting with a 'rather' small first national patent application (= priority filing), you still have one year to extend your protection to other countries.
