I am trying to trap the H2S gas produced during the fermentation of domestic wastewater by iodine solution. I made a back titration with thiosulfate in the presence of starch paste for the determination of the concentration of H2S released during the anaerobic process. Your suggestions for conditions, pH, etc., wil be greatly appreciated.
What don't you simply put your gas into a solution of lead nitrate ? Lead sulfide (PbS) is a very insoluble black compound, thus precipitates quantitatively in the presence of sulfide ions. It even displaces the equilibtrium of H2S and HS- towards S--. You can therefore recover PbS, dry it carefully and weigh it accurately.

Hi Mustapha,
I would use a physico - chemical method e.g., a gas chromatograph equipped with a (sulfur) flame photometric sensor. The advantage is that you will be able to detect other sulfur (organic) compounds as well. Moreover, you will be able to make a lot more analysis in much a shorter time interval than with wet chemistry methods.
I agree it is more expensive, but much more accurate, selective, reproducible and faster.
If you have the budget, go for it!

Thank you very much M. Frank Veroustraete for your help. This method is accurate but more expensive and in my study I'm looking for a method of controlling the bioreactor during treatment. So take the sample at each time t to follow the evolution of H2S product.
